Education

Education claims to transmit knowledge. It transmits the record.

Knowledge is compressed seeing, the kernel, small enough to carry in a breath. The record is the restatement of the kernel, layer on layer, each layer written by a hand that never held the thing. Education does not hand the child the kernel. It hands the child the record, and grades the child on how faithfully the record comes back.

The exam is the mechanism. It rewards reproduction. The student who restates the copied result with the fewest errors scores highest. The student who saw the thing and stated it in a line the grader did not expect scores lower, because the line does not match the key. The utility function is explicit, and it is wrong. It optimizes for fidelity to the record, not for contact with the world. What a utility function rewards is what the institution produces. It produces faithful copies.

So education is not neutral transmission gone slightly wrong. It is a wrong utility function working exactly as designed, selecting for restatement and against seeing, one generation after another, and calling the output educated. No one built it in bad faith. A survival instinct, to pass on what was hard-won, was handed the wrong measure, and the measure did the rest.

The cost is not ignorance. The educated know a great deal of the record. The cost is the seeing. Intelligence is contact, and contact is the one thing that sitting still and returning the key does not require and does not build. The instrument that could have lifted a new kernel is trained instead to recognize old ones. The faculty does not break. It goes quiet, because nothing rewards it.

This is the human-scale version of the machine's problem. Feed the record to the model and it returns the center of the copying. Feed the record to the child and it returns an adult who returns the center of the copying, a person taught to mistake restatement for knowledge.

Education, in this sense, is the first parasitic institution. Its members are trained to sample each other's restatements rather than the world. The independence that would have made the crowd wise was gone before it began.

The fix is not a better curriculum. A better curriculum is a better record. The fix is a different utility function. Reward contact, reward the kernel, reward the seeing that does not match the key. Everything downstream follows from which one you choose.
