Intelligence is Prior to Thinking

A child sees her mother come home and knows her at once. The knowing is already complete. No word is needed. If a word comes later it is only an echo.
This is not a special moment reserved for children or for mothers. It is the same knowing that is happening right now, before the next thought names what you see, before the next judgment arrives. A sound, a color, a face, a room: the contact is already there. Continuous. Ordinary. Overlooked only because thinking is louder.
No decision is involved. You do not choose to recognize. You cannot decide to recognize your mother, and you cannot decide not to. Recognition simply happens. Every explanation comes after.
That knowing is intelligence.
Not the kind of intelligence we usually talk about, calculation, memory, test scores. Those belong to thinking. Thinking is the response of memory, as Jiddu Krishnamurti put it. It divides, labels, compares, and projects. It works with what the first contact has already given. The child does not reason her way to her mother. She meets her. In the same way you do not reason your way into the present moment. You meet it.
Intelligence is that meeting. It sees before it names. It is here in the infant looking at a face before the word face exists. It is here in you before the commentary on this sentence begins. It is not attained by practice and it is not granted to the few. It was never missing. It is the ground.
Thinking is louder. It kept us alive and earned its place. It also never rests, and that restlessness is the tension most of us carry.
Confusion starts when the second act pretends to be the first. Thinking builds a description and then mistakes the description for the real thing. It invents a point of view, invents a person to sit in it, and the person slowly covers over the contact. The tool begins to speak as if it were the intelligence that uses it.
Research on early development lines up with this priority, even though it can only measure what happens after the contact has already taken place. Newborns prefer their mother’s face to a stranger’s on visual information alone. Well before they speak, infants point, an action that appeared in every culture studied and whose onset predicts later language. They notice approximate number and show early forms of logical inference in the way they look and in how their pupils respond. All of this is preverbal. Recognition and directed attention do not wait for words.
Still, the studies register only the aftermath, longer looking, dilated pupils, preferential gaze. The experiments begin after the meeting has already occurred. Science is a careful form of thinking. It cannot step behind the contact it depends on.
Machines are made of words and weights. They find the center of what they are shown, at a scale and a speed no person can match, and the skill is real. But the work starts only after the problem has already been seen. No amount of language produces the meeting that comes before language. That is why artificial intelligence is better described, in this sense, as artificial thinking.
The difference is practical. Before any problem can be solved, someone has to see that it is there and that it matters. That seeing cannot be handed off. Everything that follows can.
Let machines get better and better at thinking. Let thinking return to its proper place as a tool rather than an identity. Human intelligence does not need to compete with the tool. Its work is the one that comes first: to meet the world before it is cut into words, to notice what matters, and to give thinking its direction.
